24 Bit/96 kHz Audio D/A converter: Sony D/A converter converts signals from all types of DVD
Video and CD software (Linear PMC, quantisation 16,20 or 24 bits, sampling of frequency 48 or 96 Khz). In case of 24 Bits/96 Khz software, the resulting dynamic range and audio quality exceeds that of conventional CD,
closer to the audio master quality.10-Bit Video D/A Converter On DVD software, pictures are encoded using MPEG-2 technology in 8 bit resolution. The Sony players convert them into 10-bit to
minimise digital artefacts and render picture gradations closer to the original movie master. Audiophile devices For optimum sound quality of DVD Video soundtracks and CD-Audio music playback, audiophile
resistors and capacitors are used in the Sony DVD player DVP-S715. An oversized R-Core transformer is employed with low magnetic flux leakage and rich lower frequency audio reproduction. The Audio circuit is
isolated from the video circuitry. Bit-Rate Indicator Allows you to monitor the average video bit-rate level from scene to scene and disc to disc on the screen. Click Jog Shuttle Allows you to
operate easily the various playback modes (fast forward/backward, slow motion, frame-by-frame) and to browse through the on-screen menus as easily as operating a mouse on a personal computer.
Copy Protection System A system designed to protect copyrighted works from illegal copying is incorporated into DVD video. If analogue copy protection is added to picture signals to protect the copyright,
the analogue picture output cannot be recorded with proper quality. Digital Video Noise Reduction (DNR) When video signals are compressed, digital noise can appear on some portions of a DVD disc
and are sometimes visible to a discerning videophile. Sony DVP-S715 employs a new Digital Noise Reduction system based on latest digital image processing technology. With effect selectable in steps, the
result is less flickering in still background portions. Dual Discrete Optical Pick-Up Sony developed a system which employs 2 separate pick-ups, one for CD and one for DVD playback, mounted on a sing
mechanism. Allowing accurate playback of DVD Video and CD Audio discs, it eliminates lens switching, reduces laser wear and extends laser life. DVD Sound Quality DVD Video format allows
various types of soundtracks to be recorded. In addition to conventional stereo sound, many DVD Video discs carry multichannel audio tracks, especially 5.1 channel digital surround systems which deliver high
quality movie sound with impressive soundfield, such as can be experience in best movie theatres. DVD Video Backward Compatibility DVD Video players can playback DVD Video discs, as well as CD Audio discs
and Video CD discs. DVD Video Disc DVD (Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc). A high density optical disc with large capacity for storage of data, pictures and sound. Capacity is 4.7 GB
for single sided, singe layer disc, approximately 7 times larger than that of a compact disc. DVD Video Picture Quality Thanks to MPEG2 compression system, DVD can achieve a picture quality close to that of
the Digital Video Format D1 used for professional video masters. DVD video offers horizontal picture resolution of around 500 TV lines, compared to VHS (250 lines), Video CD (250 lines) and Laserdisc (420 lines).
Linear PCM Sound DVD Video discs may carry Linear PCM sound, which is an uncompressed high quality audio sound system. Sony DVD Video players can playback DVD discs with various quantizations (16 bits,
20 bits or 24 bits) and various sampling frequencies (48kHz or 96 kHz). MPEG2 MPEG2 is an abbreviation for the Moving Picture Experts Group, working committee of experts. MPEG2 is a higher
ranking standard of MPEG1 which was adopted in 1991 as the standard for CD-ROM. MPEG2 was adopted in 1994 as the universal picture coding system for broadcasting and communications as well as for storage media
such as optical disc. MPEG2 multichannel audio is one of the digital surround sound system available on DVD discs, another option for Dolby ®
Digital.Multi-Angle Function Video scenes taken from up to 9 different camera angles (for instance live concerts, sports events) can be stored on a DVD
Video disc, and during the playback, the desired angles can be selected instantly. Multi-angle DVD software should be available in the future. Function on DVD player operates only if the DVD Video disc
contains multi-angle content. Multi-Aspect Ratio Capability Some DVD software allow the effective display of widescreen pictures on TV sets with different aspect rations (4:3 or Widescreen). Pictures with a
widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio may be compressed horizontally on some DVD discs. When playing them back on a Widescreen 16:9 TV, the pictures are decompressed and reproduced in the 16:9 aspect ratio, completely
filling the screen. For viewing pictures on a 4:3 TV screen, a disc may also incorporate "pan and scan" aspect ratio (trimming the left and right portions of the playback picture) or "Letterbox" mode pictures
(pictures are reproduced with black bands above and below the picture. Multiple Language Function DVD Video format is capable of storing up to 8 different language soundtracks on a disc. Discs with 2,
3 or 4 language options will be most common in Europe. Multiple Language Subtitling DVD video format allows up to 32 different language subtitles to be stored on a disc, which can be selected during the
playback from the menu on your TV. Commonly, European discs will carry 2, 3 or 4 subtitles, depending on software companies decision. Multi Storey Function DVD Video format allows recording
of a number of different story sequences on the disc. Viewers can select story development during playback, provided the DVD Video disc contains such multi-storey content. Off Centre Installation Feet
The screw holes of these feet are "off centred" to prevent external vibrations to reach the internal circuits, thus preserving highest sound and picture quality. On-screen menu A GUI (Graphic User Interface)
is adopted for operation of the DVD player through the remote commander by selecting from menu on the screen. Optical and Coaxial digital audio outputs In addition to 2 set of analogue audio output
terminals, Sony DVD players are equipped with coaxial and optical digital audio terminals, to connect without loss of quality to any type of MPEG2/Dolby
®Digital processor.Parental Lock Function (optional standard) Allows the "locking" of software at the discretion of parents to prevent
undesired viewing by children depending on contents of software. Normal playback of the disc with this type of parental lock function requires a registered identification code and otherwise undesirable scenes are
automatically skipped. Quick Access Drive A Quick Access Drive mechanism similar to the most responsive drives in computers, with a corresponding access speed and level of reliability, for seamless playback
of any user selected programme sequence (e.g. multi-storey or multi-angle mode). Regional Code The playback management system introduced with DVD Video divides the world into 6 sales regions and sets a
region identification for each region on both players and discs. This allows playback of discs only in their applicable region. Reproduction in more than one region may be made possible, depending on
software companies decision. Region code id number 2 for both PAL and DVD Video software and PAL DVD players available in Europe. Resonance damping tray Incorporates solid material BMC (Bulk Moulding
Compound), a high density calcium carbonate polyresin reinforced with fibreglass of low resonant frequency. Absorbs external resonance during playback (DVP-S715 only). S-Video connections Since video
signals are recorded in digital components in DVD Video, the highest playback quality will be experience when connecting S-Video output of the DVD player to a TV set with S-Video input. "Smooth Scan" Using
32-bit RISC microprocessor, offers superior scan quality in high-speed, slow motion, and frame-by-frame modes, on both forward and reverse. Variable Coefficient Digital Filter This type of digital filter,
also incorporated in prestigious ES series Sony CD players, allows selection of 2 different filter curves to suit a particular type of music and personal taste of the listener (DVP—S715 only). |
